Yogyakarta located in the island of Java is the center of Javanese culture in Indonesia. However, because of the large number of universities and relatively lower cost of living compared to other cities, Yogyakarta attracted large number of students with different cultural background. This caused Yogyakarta to become a multicultural city and cultural exchanges is common. As the result, UMY has a safe learning environment for both domestic and international students.

There are several student activities that could accommodate students to develop their academic and non-academic skills. The activities include arts, scientific, sports, recreational and many more.
